鸣沙山因沙动成响而得名。山为流沙积成，沙分红、黄、绿、白、黑五色。汉代称沙角山，又名神沙山，晋代始称鸣沙山。其山东西绵亘40余公里，南北宽约20余公里，主峰海拔1715米，沙垄相衔，盘桓回环。沙随足落，经宿复初，此种景观实属世界所罕风。
